Adams County voters wait and wait and wait again for election results. So I have to wonder…  Why is Adams County continually one of the last counties on the Front Range to complete counting ballots?  This is an ongoing problem so I have to wonder why this has not been addressed.  Even the editors of the Northglenn-Thornton Sentinel said, “Once again, Adams County seems to lag the rest of the state in its ability to give timely, accurate election information.”

Results of initial counting were not released until three hours after the polls closed on Election Day and final results this year were not released until after 8:00pm the day after.  This comes despite the fact that the county can start counting absentee and mail-in ballots 10 days prior to Election Day.  The moment polls close the county should at least be able to post results of the ballots it had counted up to that point.

2008 saw nearly 20,000 more ballots cast in Adams County than in 2004 but this is hardly surprising considering the growing population of the county and the tremendous level of interest in the elections this year.  Every election we hear the same thing from Adams County about how they were caught off guard by the number of ballots, how a crush of absentee / mail-in ballots were received just before the election, and on and on.  When is the county going to fix this?

Let me forewarn Adams County now…  In the next election cycle, you can expect to have more ballots to count than this year and you can expect to receive a large number of ballots at the last minute.  Now that you know, maybe you can prepare and give your residents the results they expect and deserve.
